Because of something called epigenetic and its BIG. You are not just a sum of your parents genes, you are of a sum of their genes and on/off switches to said genes.
Yep! Epigenetics regulate the expression of your genes by turning certain ones on and off and this can be influenced by environmental cues, like exercise, lifestyle, diet and disease!

The study that just came out proves that epigenetic memory is pertinent for the survival and development of the offspring.
Breaking down the Mechanism of your DNA & Epigenetic Essentials
All of your cells have the exact same genetic code so how do they know if they are a fat cell or muscle cell? This is where epigenetics come into play. Epigenetic changes help target specific regions of the DNA to either repel or attract certain proteins whose function is to regulate your genes. Therefore, for each cell type you will have sections of DNA that are active and other sections that are inactive and the act of this regulation will guild each cell to its cell type and location.
As of now, your DNA remains pretty static (besides the natural accumulation of errors), what changes are the epigenetic markers. These markers can be influenced by environment, lifestyle, stress, diet, smoking, drinking and now we know they are stored in your epigenetic memory to be passed down generations.
Before this study it was thought that your epigenetic memory is cleared in your sex-cells ( egg, sperm), so as any good scientist they stopped assuming (I always say assuming is making an, ass (outta)-U (and)-Me but mostly just you!). This study studied a very specific modification that is seen both in fruit flies and humans called, H3K27me3.

Anyhoo, H3K27me3 alters chromatin in a cell which is the packaging of your DNA into your nucleus.
- H3K27me3 usually represses gene expression
- After embryo fertilization, H3K27me3 modifications are still present, something they thought did not happen. (Good indication that epigenetic’s are inheritable from the mother)
- Next, they created fruit flies without the H3K27me3 and discovered that by doing this they hindered the embryos ability to complete embryogenesis. (This is a good indication that epigenetic’s also play an important role in embryo development.)
From the information gathered, scientists concluded that the H3K27me3 protein was important for repressing genes that prevented embryo death when said genes were activated too soon. They feel that the epigenetic information that one inherits is pertinent in the process and accurate transcribing of ones genetic code.
Im SOOO fucked. My parents were not healthy by any stretch of the definition and I am worried. It also makes me feel more strongly about individualized medicine. The more research I do the more I am finding we are so unique person to person, therefore, health ailments need to be addressed on a person to person basis rather than trying to come up with a one size fits all approach.
