Agata from Poland Exploring the link between Epigenetics and Energy Metabolism!
Hi! My name is Agata and I am originally from Poland. I am doing my PhD in chemical biology at the University of Nottingham in the UK.
I am trying to explore the connection between epigenetics and energy metabolism. To do so, I grow human liver cells in my lab and play with their histones by adding some fancy drugs. Then, I look at the level of metabolites in cell lysates by using Mass Spectrometer - an amazing machine that can detect compounds in nanomolar scale! Mass Spec ionises compounds by spraying gas on them and then the electric field drags ions and measures their time of flight (ToF). I promise you Guys, these molecules fly faster than the blink of the eye, however, the machine deals with it perfectly and is able even to quantify compounds of my interest! Pretty impressing! :)
On the photo: me with MassSpec and HPLC in one of these days when stuff is working in the lab ;)
